Selma Alabama 1965

On the back page of the A section of The NY Times today, there is a paid advertisement published by TEAM ROC  which has part of a speech by MLK.

In February of 1965,  Dr. King wrote "A letter from a Selma, Alabama Jail" which ran as an ad in the same newspaper after he was arrested.  He said at the time "There are more negroes in jail with me than there are on the voting rolls"...

This was 55 years ago.

"Bloody Sunday" also  happened 55 years ago, where  police were instructed by the governor in Alabama “to use whatever measures are necessary to prevent a march.”

As police sprayed pepper spray, shot rubber bullets and fought with the marchers, Racist Asshole Trump (RAT) fueled the flames with his insensitive, down right disgusting display at his need to take a selfie in front of a church.

We are in a civil war again.

“Keep women and children in the middle,” he said. “If there’s a shot, stand up and make the others kneel down. Don’t be lagging around, or you’re going to get hurt. Don’t rely on the troopers, either. If you’re beaten on, crouch and put your hands over the back of your head. Don’t put up your arm to ward off a blow. If you fall, fall right down and look dead. Get to know the people in your unit, so you can tell if somebody’s missing or if there’s somebody there who shouldn’t be there. And listen! If you can’t be non-violent, let me know now.” were tactics of non violence demonstrations which accompanied instructions given to the marchers.  This was written in an article in The New Yorker from 1965

We are in a civil war again.

What stood out to me most about the MLK quotes in today's newspaper ad was that Dr. King was 36 years old at the time- as he stands in the doorway of his future.
Thirty six years old. One year older than the magic number to be eligible to become the president of the United States.  Had he not been assassinated 3 years later, he could have risen to become the president.  Imagine what that future could have looked like. That would have helped even out the injustices of the past.

The United States of America has only 3 requirements to become president.
1. to be born in the United States.
2. be a permanent resident of the US for at least 14 years
3. be 35 years or older.

So if our country hadn't been founded on racism and greed, perhaps that could have been an actual reality.

Last Friday's cryptogram puzzle's answer was about the longest Oscar Winning film, Gone With the Wind.  As fate has brought us to this place, I chose that film for my pick last night. We only got through the first 3 hours of it.  Both Harley and Hiro protested loudly.  But I persevered because I wanted to discuss the civil war from the distorted southern side.  The childish ignorance and the greed of the south can be seen in all of Scarlett o'Hara's words and actions. The criticism of the slave characters depiction is much clearer to me now, unlike when I first saw the film in St. Louis.

Back to the Game (still in the bata testing stage)
RAT EDIT

It's getting harder and harder to keep reading the RATs words but I persevere because I need to know what he says but can't stomach listening to his voice, or even listen to the reporters repeat them out loud.

Saturday no-tech day, we played this game for the first time.

Directions:
Each person writes down 4 nouns on scraps of paper and puts them into a bowl
Each person picks 3 random nouns out of the bowl.
Each person blindly picks one RAT quote that I've preprinted.
Each person must rewrite the RAT's quote using the nouns for metaphors.

Example by Hiro:

Original sentence by RAT:

That was incredible.  We filled up a stadium like grout filling up a plumbing pipe. The stadium was packed like Coney Island in July.  I played eyes on our competitors.  It's as incredible as a platypus with wings.  This is a movement as spectacular as a skyscraper in a rural community.

What I learned is that you cannot use any personal pronouns when writing a presidential speech.  I think it should be illegal to use the words "me" or "I" when giving speeches if you are in political office.  This should be one of the requirements of becoming president- you can no longer use those pronouns.

So here are some quotes that can be rewritten to be more intelligible, and presidential from yesterday's rantings from the White House:

"Mayors and Governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them."

"This includes ANTIFA and others who are leading instigators of this violence. One law and order, and that is what it is: one law. We have one beautiful law, and once that is restored -- and fully restored -- we will help you, we will help your business, and we will help your family. America is founded upon the rule of law."
